Happy {first} Mother's Day

Dearest Lainey,
Today is our first mother's day together.  So I figured I would share a little motherly love with you.

More times than I can count, I have been told that I look just like my mom - that I act just like my mom - that I am pretty much a mini-version of my mom.  This happens even more since I started working at the same place as her.

To that I say,
Thank You.

My mom is an incredible woman.  She is, no lie, the smartest person I know.  She is successful and happy in life.  She is both technical and creative.  She is as strong as a rock and has seen our family through all of its moments - good and bad.

So if someone sees her in me, that is, indeed, a compliment.
One of the best compliments I could ever receive.

I am so glad you are growing up with NeeNee in your life.  Pay attention, she can (and will) teach you a thing or two about life.  And I will try my hardest to pass her lessons down to you too.  Some are practical lessons, some are whimsical lessons, and some are even "dirty" lessons.  Don't worry - we'll save the dirty ones until you're older. Ha!

Nevertheless, follow our lead and you'll be juuuuuuust fine.  But remember! You must still think for yourself.  NeeNee has always, always, always supported my decisions.  Even when she thought they were the wrong decisions, she stood by me.

I will always be here for you. (pinky promise)

My hope for you is this...
I hope that as we go on this adventure together, that someday you will be proud to have me as your momma. I hope that some day if someone tells you that you are like me... you proudly smile and say "thank you."  I hope that you happily accept the day that you wake up and say to yourself, "Wow - I am growing up to be like my mother." (Yes, it really does happen.)

I love you, baby girl.  And I am so blessed to have you as my daughter. Every day, when we say our bedtime prayers together and I lay you down to sleep, I always sneak one last peak at you and whisper one more prayer - I thank God for giving me you.

Love always,
Momma

Happy Mother's Day to all the mommies out there!!

The Menu of a Toddler

Let me start by saying this is by no means a dietician's or other medical professional's opinion or recommendation.
This is simply our adventure into the land of being a baby foodie.
What has worked for us may not necessarily work for you.
Take what I say with a grain of salt and be sure to use your own intuition and/or instinct for what is best for your child.

One of the biggest comments I get told is, "You seem like a mom who would make her own baby food."

Why, thank you.  I am glad I come across as that put together. And while, yes, I would love to make all of Lainey's food myself.... it's just not realistic for us right now.  So, when I reply with a solid, "Oh, how I wish I had the time do that."

The next question I usually get is, "What is that pouch?" Or I get spotted feeding Lainey from a pouch and someone says, "Well isn't that a great idea!?  We didn't have things like that when I had a baby to feed!"

Well, it's true - pouches are "the new thing" in baby food.  But that isn't really why I use them.  I made a decision when Lainey started eating solids that she would be eating organically as much as possible.  And it just so happens that most organic baby food comes in pouches.  There are many brands of baby food out there... from the popular Gerber to Earth's Best, Ella's Kitchen and Plum Organics - just to name a few.

And believe me, we have tried them all!
And...
We have actually eaten most of them.

Lainey didn't start solids until she was about 6 months old.  While most of the time we don't consider her adjusted age, this one of the times that her pediatrician wanted to take things slow.  So we held out until she was 6 months old, which would equal about 4 months adjusted.

Little Miss never took to cereal very much, so I don't have any advice for that.  We tried every type of cereal we could and she just wasn't into it... so we put our big girl pants on and stepped it up a notch.

Starting out was tricky, to be honest.  I had to make sure we only tried foods that were a single ingredient. And single veggie flavors were tricky to find in a lot of organic options.  We actually used a brand called NurturMe, which is a powdered baby food that you add formula or water to in order to get the right consistency.  I am a big fan of this stuff! It's easy to use, tasted like the fruit/veg it said it was and for the most part, was easy to travel with! The other cool thing about it is that when she gets older, I can sprinkle it into other foods and add a secret vegetable to the dish.  (Nope, there's no shame in my game -- I am all for the toddler taste bud trickery!!)

Then we moved on to combos.  Simple combos at first.  Since there weren't a ton of plain options early one, I wanted to make sure anything new in a combo was the only new ingredient.  This way, if there was any type of allergic reaction, I could more easily pinpoint where it came from.  For example, Ella's Kitchen makes a pears, peas, and broccoli pouch.  Well before we taste-tested it, I made sure Lainey had already tackled pears and peas.  This way, if something threw her off, I would know it was probably the broccoli.

We did the fruit and veggie thing for a few months...

Now comes the sticky wicket in our menu... MEAT!  Now, I know that meat is not a necessity... people are vegetarians all day - every day.  But I still want Lainey to try/eat it.  If she grows up and decides to be a vegetarian... more power to her! I've been there - done that.  It's not as hard as one may think, but I do love me some chicken!

Ok, sorry - back on track...

Meats have been a tough one.  I have seen the stink face at the dinner table more times than I can count.  And I have had it thrown back up more times than I would like to ever remember.  But finally! (sing kitchen angels, sing!) We have found a winner! I think it all boils down to texture. I have compared the ingredients to a Plum Organics chicken dinner and the Ella's Kitchen equivalent.  Both have nearly identical ingredients, but I can assure you they have very different textures.  Now, that is not to say one texture is better than the other... they are just clearly different textures.  Lainey prefers the texture of Ella's Kitchen.  Your baby may prefer that of Plum Organics or some other brand.  And who knows, maybe she will like the more lumpy texture as she gets older.  But for now, it's just not working out for us.

I have one trick up my motherly sleeve, though, for serving meats to a toddler.  It took me a while to get it, but now that I see the pattern... it works like a charm!

Are you ready for it??

Start with the side item first! Yep - start with the fruit, veggie, or combo there of then add the meat to the meal! Yes, more toddler taste bud trickery.... I know, I am  a mean mom.  But hey! It works!!

After I can tell Lainey is done with the food, we end the meal with a little "dessert" of puffs or yogurt bites.  Just a few to keep her still while her tummy settles and I can clean up the kitchen.

Lainey is still drinking formula too - she does about 4 6oz. bottles a day.  Most of the time, she takes the bottle about 30 minutes after her solid meal.

Here's our daily menu
8am - Breakfast
One pouch of something like these:
  • Plum Organics Mish Mash of blueberries, oats, and quinoa
  • Ella's Kitchen Brekkie (fruit, rice and yogurt)
8:30am - Bottle

Noon - Lunch
One pouch of something like these:
  • Greek yogurt mixed pouch
  • Vegetable mix of some kind
  • Generally, not a lot of fruit mixes at lunch
12:30pm - Bottle

4pm - Bottle "Snack"
She generally takes a full bottle at this time with no solids

7pm - Dinner
One meat pouch + Side item pouch
  • Chicken or Beef pouch
  • Fruit/Veg mix pouch
  • Followed by a "serving" of puffs
8pm - Bedtime bottle
This is our down time.  No playing, just sitting quietly watching TV.  Sometimes we even have this bottle in her bedroom.  After the bottle, we read a book - say a prayer - and go to bed.

I should also say, Lainey has pretty good reflux, and I am confident that she knows when she is done.  So when acts like she is done eating, even if I think she should eat more, I don't try for "just one more bite." Because odds are, I will get that bite and then some back on the high chair tray!

I am also confident that she knows when she is hungry.  Because of this, I let her decide if this "schedule" works for her on a daily basis.  If we are out and she doesn't seem interested in eating - ok, fine. Skip it for now and you can eat it later.  This may seem like a bad idea, like it would throw our whole day off.  It really doesn't; she puts herself back on track.  She is consistently hungry at "dinner time" regardless of when she ate lunch/snack. And bedtime always falls before 8:45pm.

Hopefully this helps you with your toddler's menu too.

Drooling infant to Teething toddler... all in the same week?

I have known for a little while now that Lainey has been teething...

I mean, she is a living, breathing faucet of drool.  But it always seemed that as soon as the thought crossed my mind, it quickly left as she never had any other "symptoms."  At the same time, she has been a roller for months. She has found every piece of dust, dog hair, and dirt my floors have to offer - it's always stuck to her. The best is when it's stuck her drool-covered chin.  (Perhaps, I should vacuum more often - don't judge me.)

Lately, she has been figuring out how to get on all fours.... and then flop right back to her tummy and roll to where ever she was trying to go.

Within 24 hours this past weekend, Lainey went from rolling drool monster to full-on tooth in mouth crawling TODDLER!
Holy milestones, Batman!

While this is VERY exciting... for the love of everything in this world, I can't wait until this tooth finally pops completely through her little gums.  Now, I have heard some horror stories of teeth coming in and so far, we are not in the midst of a horror store, but I am one very exhausted lady these days!  It hasn't caused any ear infections or really even a fever.  But it is certainly screwing with my baby's sleep!! Which in return means it is screwing with MY sleep!

However!
Let's look at the glass half-full....

Did you hear?!
We have a tooth!!!
AND we are crawling!!!

Baby girl is growing up crazy fast and it seems like in the last 2 weeks she has gone from little baby to big girl... dare I even say, this change may have happened over night?!  Go go gadget big girl!

Over the weekend, Phil and I weighed Lainey... she weighed in at a whopping 15 pounds! That is nearly FIVE TIMES her birth weight. Insane.  While, I know... she is still a tiny lil' thang, the point, she is growing like a weed and always developing.

It is the absolutely coolest feeling in the world to watch her engage in activities and learn something new - every single day, it seems.

She is becoming a person,
with her own personality,
her own laugh,
her own quarks.

This photo may be the exact opposite of our lives right now...
one can still hope, right?

Living in your house

Currently, if you came to visit my house, I would be appalled to have you come in the front door.  But I would happily welcome you!

I may even start keeping a basket of blinders by the front door for guests to put on and wear as I escort them into the common area.  But of course, that family living room has a rubber play mat in the center of it and is littered with toys. Toys that squeak - toys that rattle - toys that roll - toys that light up and dance.

Toys that hurt like hell if you step on them. Toys. Toys. Toys.

My studio has a hodge podge of baby gear and art supplies strewn across it and my dining room has a table partially covered with mail.

My kitchen has a smelly dog sleeping in the middle of it and a Bumbo seat + tray sitting on the counter patiently awaiting a tiny hiney to fill it for dinner.

Yep. That's my house.... nay, that's my home.

Beach Baby

Impromptu spring break vacation? Yes, please!! NeeNee got a cottage in Corolla last week and we just couldn't resist the road trip fever.  So Biggie and I loaded up the kiddos and hit the road, sans dads! The weather was nice, very spring-like -- some random heat and chilly winds!  But cold temps don't bother us...when you get to see the sunrise at the beach, any day is a good day.

Lainey did great! I didn't expect any less from her.

She wasn't sure what to think of the sand and may have tried to eat a sand-covered shovel, but that's okay! She didn't scream or cry so I'd call the sandy adventure a success!

She had a ball "swimming" in the giant tub!   The pool was closed and even if it had been opened, it was too chilly to swim. So who needs a pool when you've got a giant bath tub? Not this girl! *(Looks like we are graduating from a bath seat sooner than I expected!)

But I will say... sleeping in the pack-n-play is not her friend.  Every night, she woke up uncomfortable and every night, I gave in and let her sleep in my bed - which consequently got turned into a pillow fort so that my little wiggle worm wouldn't fall off the bed! But hooray! She slept in her crib all night with no problems once we got home! Looks like I didn't rock the routine too much!! I was nervous that I was creating the world's worst habit with this vacation...woohoo!

All in all, it was a wonderful trip.
It was nice to just get a way for a little bit, for sure.

Happy Easter, ya'll!

Lainey's first Easter was a wonderful day in our family.  The trio met the rest of the fam at church and enjoyed a great sermon! Lainey sat for the entire service without going to the nursery.  She even joined in on our last hymn and sang the Lord's songs just as beautifully as the choir.

The Easter Bunny stopped... or hopped... by our house, of course! He made great use of my Grandma's old milk glass basket.  I think a new tradition has been born.  You know, every year you use the same stockings - they're important - it's your stocking.  Well, why not try to do the same thing for Easter?  Yes, Easter baskets are fun to pick out, but this basket is important to me and I'd like it to be important to Lainey.  So for the time being, Grandma's basket has now become Lainey's basket.  This year, EB brought us tons of new flower clips, some snacks, and a new book! EB also brought Daddy some Kinder eggs - straight from Germany!!

All in all, it was a great day spent with our family!

Here's the photo recap.

The great debate

The great debate continues in our house - Momma's Girl vs. Daddy's Girl.  Over the last month or so, Lainey has certainly developed some clingy tendencies. Which really means... I can't leave the room.  And I certainly can not let her see me leave the room! {Heaven forbid!}

If we were keeping score, I would certainly be in the lead at this point.  At night, it's all about Momma... which I love, I really love.  But really, kiddo? Let Daddy take the night shift for once.  Now, that makes it sound Lainey isn't sleeping through the night - she is.  Don't get it wrong - the girl can sleep! Generally, it's an 8pm bedtime and 8am wake up.  But on the one-off nights where sleep just isn't happening - I'd love for Daddy to be able to help out.  But it is what it is.  I am sure these things come in waves and give it another month, it will be all about Daddy again.

But for now...
Lainey is a Momma's girl
